  • Hindu festival celebrating the marriage of Ram and Sita
  • It was on this day that Ram married to Sita after breaking the bow of Shiva

  • The day is also of great importance at Janakpur in Nepal, where thousands of pilgrims arrive many from India, as it is believed here that Sita was born at Janakpurdham and got married to Bhagavan Sri Ram here
  • It is one of the major festivals in the Mithilanchal region

  • So this festival celebrates the marriage anniversary of Ram and Sita
  • A very large number of devotees from all over the country go to Janakpur Dham and offer prayer before Janki or Sita

  • It is observed on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha or waxing phase of moon in the Margashirsha month (November – December) as per Hindu calendar

  • According to the epic Ramayana, it was on this day that the prince of Ayodhya, Lord Sri Ram who is the incarnation of God Vishnu visited the kingdom of Janaka (presently situated on the border of Nepal) and won the hand of goddess Sita in marriage by breaking the bow
